Tips on Renting a Forklift

Obviously, a forklift can be purchased but why do many companies choose to forklift hire? There are lots of factors why they use this strategy but more importantly, one should know what to consider when renting a forklift.

1. Make sure that you choose the right forklift for the job – providers should be able to assist you with this one, but you should also be able to provide them with information as to what you are specifically looking for.

o    Usage – how long are you going to use the machine?
o    Load to be lifted – bigger jobs requires a bigger forklift.
o    Range of the lift – how high do you need to lift the load?
o    Fuel – depends on what terrain you will be using the forklift. Knowing the kind of fuel will also help you in preparing your budget.

2. Coverage of Maintenance – Maintenance should be a given. The insurance coverage should include if the vehicle breaks down. Your business can’t afford any form of delays just because the forklift broke down. There are providers that guarantee a machinery replacement in case the forklift can’t be fixed, so look doubly hard to find them.

3. Choose a forklift that has a ‘certificate of thorough examination’ that is not expired. Also ask if they conform to the LOLER – Lifting Operations and Lifting Regulations. If you are not knowledgeable what this is, ask the provider for a copy of this and do your own inspection.

4. There are contract exclusions that providers abide to. Again, ask your provider about this if you are not knowledgeable with it. Standard exclusions should include operator damage or misuse, Fork wear, tyres/punctures, and consumables (oil, fuel, filters, grease, and many others).

5. Other things you should look for in choosing a provider are:
•    Reputation – track record is always important. Research about their company first and see if there were any complaints about their services from past employers.
•    See if they are financially stable to support their business in case a problem arises.
•    Located near you – it’s not logical to hire a provider far from you because that will only add up to your expenses.

Another thing that you should inspect is the forklift operator. They should a current license to operate forklifts and they should have proper training. Deciding on a forklift hire plays a big part in whether your current project succeeds or not.
